Save your address book as a file that you can transfer to other devices

There may be times when you want to use your Outlook.com address book entries on another computer or share information with someone else. In these cases, you can export your contact list to a shared file and then import it to another computer or send it via email or a file sharing site.

The instructions in this article apply to Outlook.com and Outlook Online.

Export Address Book to CSV File

If you want to use your contact list on another computer or share it with someone else, export your address book information to a CSV file, a format supported by most email clients. Then import the file to another computer and use your Outlook.com contacts there.

The screenshots in this article use the classic Outlook.com experience. The new Outlook.com interface looks a little different, but the process works the same.

  1. Go to Outlook.com and select People

  2. Select All contacts

  3. Select Check

  4. Select Export contacts

  5. Select Export

  6. File is uploading contacts.csv with a message at the bottom of the browser window.

  7. On your desktop, go to the folder Downloads † Save the contacts.csv file to a folder where you can retrieve it later, or to a flash drive if you plan to physically move the file.

Use the address book file on another computer

  1. Insert the flash drive containing the address book file into your computer or download it from an email or file sharing site.

  2. Open Outlook.com

  3. Select People Check Import contacts

  4. Select Overview

  5. Select a file contacts.csv and then select Open

  6. Select Import

  7. A confirmation message appears indicating that the address book has been successfully imported.
