Simple steps to enable automatic updates

All versions of Outlook after Outlook 2013 are automatically updated when new updates are made available by Microsoft. However, these updates can be accidentally disabled, preventing scheduled updates from being downloaded and applied automatically. Keeping Outlook up to date will provide the latest improvements, fix any bugs, and apply hotfixes.

The instructions in this article apply to Outlook 2019, Outlook 2016, Outlook 2013, and Outlook for Office 365. Updates to Outlook.com are managed by Microsoft and are processed automatically.

How to enable and check Outlook updates?

If you check your account settings and see that Outlook is not updating automatically, a quick fix will restore the automatic update feature.

  1. Go to the tab File and select Office account

  2. Select Update options Enable updates

    if you don’t see it Enable updates or if it is gray it means that automatic updates are enabled or that an Office administrator has set a group policy to update Outlook

  3. Select Yes when asked if you want Outlook to make changes to your computer.

View Outlook updates

Microsoft maintains a list of Outlook updates on its website. Here’s how to access these updates and see what they offer in Outlook:

  1. Go to the tab File and select Office account

  2. Select Update options View updates

  3. This page will open in your default web browser. What’s new in Office 365 describing the latest changes to Office programs.

  4. In chapter What’s new in your favorite Office application select Outlook

  5. On the page What’s new in Outlook for Office 365 learn why the update was released and what it addressed or added to your Outlook email program.

  6. Click Lake for details on the update.
