Learn how to easily recover a forgotten AOL email password

The first step in AOL Mail password recovery is to check your browser. Current versions of most Internet browsers offer an auto-complete feature. You probably noticed this when you first entered your username and password on a password-protected site; the browser will usually show a pop-up asking if you want to save your login information.

If you have recently visited the AOL Mail site, you may have saved your username and password using this feature, in which case the browser may autofill the password field. If not, double click on the field password † if any passwords match, they will be displayed in a drop-down menu from which you can select the correct password. You can also consult your browser’s help site to find out where your password is stored in its settings, how to recover it and how to enable or disable this feature. The procedure is the same in all browsers.

If you haven’t saved your password to your browser, it’s time to use AOL’s password recovery process.

If you receive an email asking you to change your password, do not click on a link in the email; the email may have come from a hacker. Instead, enter the website address into your browser and go to your account. If it is a legitimate request, it will appear there.

By following one of these procedures, you can sign in to your AOL Mail account with your new password.

Ways to remember passwords

Forgetting passwords is common – as common as the passwords themselves. Instead of storing a handwritten list or relying on your memory, consider storing your passwords in a password manager. There are several safe options available, from saving in the browser to downloading third-party programs (some free, some paid). Simply check each method you use to ensure that your passwords are stored in an encrypted format so that unauthorized parties cannot access it easily.

Tips for creating secure passwords

When resetting your AOL Mail password, keep the following tips in mind:

  • Don’t use anything obvious like “123456” or “my password”.

  • The longer your password, the stronger it is.

  • Don’t use letters that are next to each other on the keyboard or that follow a clear pattern, such as the four corners of your phone’s keyboard.

  • Do not use the same password you use on another site. Make each password unique for each site.

  • Do not create a password for personal data such as dates of birth, addresses, telephone numbers, etc.

  • Change your password from time to time.
