Make your Outlook.com inbox exclusive and block content from unknown senders

Don’t email people you don’t know in your Outlook.com inbox. With a minor configuration tweak, any email not received from people in your address book or safe senders list will end up in the folder Spam. You can also block attachments, photos, and links from people you don’t know.

The instructions in this article apply to Outlook.com and Outlook Online.

Make sure Outlook.com only accepts email from known senders

To make sure Outlook.com only allows email from people you know:

  1. Select Settings .

  2. Select View all Outlook settings .

  3. In chapter Settings select mail > spam .

  4. In chapter Filters Check the box Only trust email from addresses on my Safe Senders & Domains Lists and Safe Mailing Lists .

  5. Select Save .

Block content from unknown senders

Block attachments, images, and links from anyone not on your safe senders list. This prevents downloading attachments and images that may contain worms or viruses. It also disables links that may lead to unsafe websites.

  1. Select Settings .

  2. Select View all Outlook settings .

  3. In chapter Settings select mail > spam .

  4. In chapter Filters select Block attachments, images, and links from people not on my safe senders and domains list .

  5. Select Save .

Block senders

You can also block individual senders by email address. This option works the same as the Safe Senders List.

  1. Select Settings .

  2. Select View all Outlook settings .

  3. In chapter Settings select mail > spam .

  4. In chapter Blocked senders and domains select To add .

  5. Enter the email addresses you want to block and click Input .

  6. Select Save .

Add email addresses to the safe senders list

Add important senders to your Outlook.com People address book as known senders. Or add individual addresses or entire domains to your safe senders list.

  1. Select Settings .

  2. Select View all Outlook settings .

  3. In chapter Settings select mail > spam .

  4. In chapter Safe Senders and Domains select To add .

  5. Enter the email addresses you want to allow and click Enter .

  6. Select Save .

Add people to your address book

If you set your inbox to allow only trusted emails, email from new contacts may be delivered to your Junk Email folder. To deliver these emails to your inbox, add these contacts to your address book. To find the address book, go to View switch and select People . Then select new contact enter the contact information and select Save .
