Train Outlook.com to remove spam and junk emails from your mailbox

Outlook Online filters most of the spam sent to your mailbox in your Junk E-mail folder. Sometimes spam or other types of unsolicited email ends up in your Outlook.com mailbox. When spam appears in your inbox, move it to your Junk E-mail folder. You teach Outlook.com to identify these spam emails so that they automatically move those messages to the Junk Email folder.

The instructions in this article apply to Outlook.com and Outlook Online.

Mark a message as junk in Outlook.com

To let Outlook.com know that a particular message has passed through the spam filter, move it to your Junk E-mail folder.

  1. Go to Outlook.com and sign in to your account.

  2. Go to the Outlook.com message list and select the unwanted messages. If you want to mark multiple messages as spam at the same time, check the circle next to the message.

  3. Go to the toolbar and select Waste .

  4. Select mess or phishing . You can also block the sender.

  5. In the dialog box Report junk e-mail select Report or Do not report message to Microsoft.

  6. The message is moved to the Junk E-mail folder and Outlook.com knows what types of messages you consider spam.

  7. Items in the Junk E-mail folder are deleted after 30 days.

Using spam filters

If Outlook.com moves non-junk mail to the Junk E-mail folder, put the senders on the Safe Senders and Domains list.

If the email comes from a mailing list, it may be marked as spam because your email address is not in the “To” line. If you trust the mailing list, add their address to the safe senders and domains list.

To add an email address to the safe senders and domains list:

  1. Go to Settings .

  2. Select View all Outlook settings .

  3. In the dialog box Settings select mail > spam .

  4. In chapter Safe Senders and Domains select To add and enter the email address of the sender or domain from which you want to receive emails.

If Outlook does not recognize the sender of the spam and does not move the messages to the Junk E-mail folder, add the sender or domain to the list Blocked senders and domain .

  5. Select Save .
