Tame your Outlook.com inbox with personalized folders

In 2013, Microsoft stopped its Hotmail email service and moved Hotmail users to Outlook.com where they can still send and receive email using their hotmail.com email address. Using Outlook.com in a web browser is different than using the nonexistent Hotmail client, but moving messages into folders is a simple process you can use to stay organized.

The instructions in this article apply to Outlook.com and Outlook Online.

Set up folders in Outlook.Com

To organize your email, move messages to folders containing related or similar messages. For example, use folders to separate email into work and personal folders or set up folders for each of your interests and responsibilities.

  1. Sign in to Outlook.com.

  2. near Navigation expand the list folders

  3. Select new map

  4. Enter a name for the folder in the text box and click Enter

  5. Repeat this process for as many folders as you want to use to organize your email. Folders appear at the bottom of the folder list in the navigation pane.

Move email to Outlook.com manually

Every time you open Outlook.com and go to your inbox, scan your email and move messages to the folders you set up. Make extensive use of the Delete and Junk E-mail icons in the toolbar when sorting.

  1. Open your Outlook.com inbox.

  2. Hover over the message you want to move and check the box. If you want to move multiple emails to the same folder, check the box for each email.

  3. Select Move to and select a folder. If you don’t see the folder name, select All folders and select a folder from the list.

  4. Repeat this process for emails destined for other folders.

Automatically move mail to Outlook.com

If you regularly receive emails that aren’t important and you don’t want to see right away, use Focused Mailbox. Focused Inbox shows important emails and emails you interact with often. Broken emails are placed in the Other Inbox.

  1. Open the Outlook.com focus folder.

    If you don’t see Focused Inbox, go to Settings and turn on the switch Focused folder “

  2. Hover your mouse over an unimportant, unwanted, or spam message and select the check box.

  3. Select Move to

  4. Select Always go to the “Others” folder

  5. E-mail from that person or the sender’s address is automatically moved to the Other folder.
