Outlook won’t open? Try these solutions

If you can’t start Microsoft Outlook, it may be easier to fix and start properly than you think.

The correct solution depends on what you are experiencing and the version of Microsoft Outlook you have installed. Note that you may get an error message or see nothing at all.

These instructions apply to Outlook 2019, 2016, 2013, or 2010, and Outlook for Mac 2016 or Outlook for Mac 2011.

Using Support and Recovery Assistant

If you’re using Office 365, you can download and use this automated tool to diagnose and fix many issues, even if you can’t start Microsoft Outlook.

  1. Download the Support and Recovery Assistant app from Microsoft.

  2. Run the installation. After installation, Support and Recovery Assistant will start automatically.

  3. Agree to accept the license agreement.

  4. Select Outlook as the program you need help with.

  5. Click Further .

  6. Click Outlook won’t start and press Further .

  7. Click Yes to confirm you are using an affected computer.

  8. Click Further .

  9. Enter the email address and password you use for Office 365 and click Further .

  10. Wait while the app diagnoses your problem.

  11. View the results when the assistant is ready.

  12. Follow the instructions and exit the tool if Outlook is being repaired.

  13. Check suggestions for other solutions if the tool does not solve the problem.

Disable add-ons

If you can open Outlook in safe mode, one or more add-ins may conflict with Outlook. Disable all add-ons and see if the problem is solved.

  1. Start Outlook on safe mode .

  2. Click File .

  3. Click parameters: .

  4. Click add-ons on the left panel.

  5. know for sure COM Add-ins selected in the Manage box at the bottom of the Outlook Options window.

  6. Click To go .

  7. Include or screenshot the list of add-ons before disabling them.

  8. Clear all selected check boxes in the list of COM add-ins.

  9. Click remove .

  10. Click File and choose Log out .

Outlook Repair

It is possible that your Outlook application is damaged. You can use Microsoft Office’s built-in repair tool to fix this.

Restore Outlook 2016, 2013 or 2010 to Windows 10.

  1. Close all Microsoft Office applications.

  2. Enter Applications and Features in the Windows search box.

  3. Select Applications and Features .

  4. Search and click Microsoft Office in the list of installed apps and features.

  5. Click Change.

  6. Click Yes if a user account control window pops up asking “Do you want this app to be able to make changes to your device?”

  7. Select Online repair and press the button To recover .

  8. Restart Outlook when the recovery process is complete.

Restore Outlook 2016, 2013 or 2010 to Windows 8.

  1. Close all Microsoft Office applications.

  2. right click button Get started .

  3. Select Control panel .

  4. know for sure Category selected in the View by list.

  5. Click Uninstall a program in the “Programs” section.

  6. Right click Microsoft Office and choose Change .

  7. Select Online Recovery , if available (depending on the type of Microsoft Office installed).

  8. Click To recover .

  9. Click Yes when the User Account Control window appears.

  10. Restart Outlook when the recovery process is complete.

Restore Outlook 2016, 2013 or 2010 to Windows 7. .

  1. Close all Microsoft Office applications.

  2. Press the button Get started .

  3. Select Control panel .

  4. know for sure Category selected in the View by list.

  5. Click Uninstall a program in the “Programs” section.

  6. Select Microsoft Office from the list of programs.

  7. Click Change .

  8. Select Online Recovery , if available (depending on the type of Microsoft Office installed).

  9. Click To recover .

  10. Click Yes when the User Account Control window appears.

  11. Restart Outlook when the recovery process is complete.

Create a new profile

If your Outlook profile is corrupted, it can cause all kinds of problems like Outlook not opening. Creating a new profile and setting it up with an email account can solve this problem. To complete this procedure, you need to start Outlook in safe mode.

  1. Click File .

  2. Click account settings .

  3. Select Profile management in the drop-down list.

  4. Click Show profiles .

  5. Click To add .

  6. Enter a name for the new profile in the field Profile name and press Okay .

  7. Follow the instructions to set up an email account on your new profile.

  8. Restart Outlook.

  9. Click File .

  10. Click account settings .

  11. Select Edit profile in the drop-down list.

  12. Click Okay in an Outlook message that is closed.

  13. Restart Outlook.

  14. Select the name of the new profile you created from the list Profile name and press Okay .

Recover Outlook data files

If you still can’t open an Outlook window, you can use the Inbox Repair tool to find and possibly fix the problem.

Navigate to the file location that corresponds to your version of Outlook.

  • Outlook 2019: C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficerootOffice16

  • Outlook 2016: C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficerootOffice16

  • Outlook 2013: C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice15

  • Outlook 2010: C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice14

  1. Scroll down to SCANPST.EXE .

  2. double tap SCANPST.EXE to open it.

  3. Make sure your Outlook data file is listed as the file you want to scan. If not, you can click Browse and navigate to data files.

  4. Click Get started to start scanning.

  5. Click To recover to solve the problems found.

  6. Start Outlook after the repair is complete.

Reset navigation bar

A startup problem with the navigation bar may prevent Outlook from opening properly. Resetting the navigation bar may solve the problem.

  1. Press the keys Win+R on your keyboard to open the Run command.

  2. Enter Outlook.exe /resetnavpane in the “Open” field and click Okay .

  3. Try to open Outlook, the process is complete.

Check for updates

A recent update may include a fix for Outlook not being able to start. Check and install all available updates, even if you can’t open Outlook.

  1. Open an Office application such as Word or Excel.

  2. Go to section reference .

  3. Click Check for updates .

  4. Select Download and install automatically See the “How do I install updates?” section.

  5. Click Check for updates .

Rebuild the Outlook database

Using a Microsoft tool to repair a corrupted database can cause Outlook not to open.

  1. Close all Microsoft Office applications.

  2. Hold down a key Option , click the icon Outlook in the Dock to open the Microsoft Database utility.

  3. Click the ID of the database you want to restore.

  4. Click rebuild .

  5. Restart Outlook when the process is complete.

Note that if you have a Microsoft Exchange account, rebuilding the database will remove any information that is out of sync with the server. You may want to back up all Outlook data that is only stored on your computer before rebuilding the database.
