Add a little action to your slides

An animated GIF can add humor or draw attention, and you can easily insert a GIF into PowerPoint to add animation without the hassle of creating a video file. Learn how to place a GIF on a PowerPoint slide in your version of the software. It’s as easy as inserting an image.

Remark . The instructions in this article apply to PowerPoint 2016, 2013, 2010, and PowerPoint 365/Online.

Insert a GIF in PowerPoint 2010 or later

If you’ve ever added an image to a PowerPoint slide, you’re already familiar with the steps involved in adding a GIF, except for one extra step.

  1. Open PowerPoint and navigate to the slide where you want to add the GIF.

  2. Go to the tab Insert and select Pictures . The Insert Picture dialog box opens.

  3. Navigate to the location of the GIF file on your computer. Select a file and then select Insert .

  4. Go to the tab slideshow . Select From current slide in the Start Slideshow group to animate the GIF.

Remark . When the presentation is played, the GIF file is automatically animated.

How to find GIF files

If you don’t want to use the GIF you downloaded to your computer, PowerPoint can help you find it.

  1. Open PowerPoint and navigate to the slide where you want to add the GIF.

  2. Go to the tab Insert .

  3. Select Insert picture in PowerPoint 2010 or Embed images online in PowerPoint 2013 or later.

  4. Make sure it is selected Creative Commons only . This ensures that you look for images that you can legally use in your presentation.

  5. Enter animated or gif in the search box and click Enter . You can refine the options by adding a keyword, such as animated duck or business gif .

  6. Choose the GIF you want to use and select Insert to add it to the slide.

Insert a GIF into PowerPoint for Mac

Adding a GIF to the Mac version of PowerPoint is almost identical to its Windows counterpart.

  1. Open PowerPoint and navigate to the slide in your presentation where you want to place the GIF.

  2. Go to the tab Insert .

  3. Select Image in Group Insert and select Image from file .

  4. Navigate to the location of the GIF file on your computer. Select a file and then select Insert .

  5. Go to menu slideshow and choose Play from current slide to view the animation.

Remark . When the presentation is played, the GIF file is automatically animated.

Insert GIF in PowerPoint 365/Web

While not as robust as the premium desktop versions, you can still insert a GIF into PowerPoint Online, but online animation is not supported.

Advice . If you send your finished presentation to an online version of PowerPoint, such as PowerPoint for Windows or Mac, the GIF will be animated.

  1. Sign in to your Microsoft account online and go to PowerPoint.

  2. Go to the slide where you want to add the GIF.

  3. Go to the tab Insert and select Pictures . The Insert Picture dialog box opens.

  4. Navigate to the location of the GIF file on your computer. Select a file and then select Insert .
