Owners of household plots and walk-behind tractors think about how to cultivate the land – use cutters from the factory kit or buy an additional plow. The decision depends on the quality of the soil and the volume of the site. To make a competent choice, it is necessary to take into account the advantages and disadvantages of both devices, determine the type of soil, and only after that proceed to plowing.

Advantages and disadvantages of the plow

The plow is indispensable in cases where it is necessary to prepare complex and large plots for agricultural planting.

The advantages of this device are:

  • excellent result after treatment of excessively compacted soils and even virgin soils;
  • the ability to adjust the depth of plowing;
  • the ability to lift and knock down massive layers of earth, to penetrate deep into the ground;
  • this attachment can easily cope with the plowing of large areas;
  • some plows are universal, they can be used as ridgers when processing potato plantations and other crops.

Disadvantages of the plow:

  • is not included in the standard kit of the walk-behind tractor, you will have to buy it separately and spend money;
  • free space is required for storage in the hozblok;
  • rarely used;
  • after processing the site with such a nozzle, it is impossible to immediately start planting, because after that large clods of earth remain, which still need to be broken up with strawberries.

This attachment is ideal for bare floors and will quickly cover large areas.

Advantages and disadvantages of a cutter

As a rule, such equipment is included in the main set of the walk-behind tractor, so no additional financial costs are required for its use. Another advantage of strawberries is the quality of breaking up clods. After such processing, the lumps are small. By the way, if you walk with the walk-behind tractor again, the ground will also be crushed.

The disadvantages of processing a virgin floor with a cutter are:

  • the complexity of managing a walk-behind tractor with cutters, high labor costs;
  • the impossibility of processing the first time, it is necessary to re-pass the site;
  • plowing takes a long time (the more compacted the soil, the longer it will take)
  • difficult to cope with large volumes of ploughing.

Many gardeners complain that after working with cutters, their hands and back hurt.

What is better

In cases where it is necessary to plow a too neglected area of virgin land, the cutters will not help.

The most efficient way to work hard-packed soil is to combine both tillage methods. Experienced gardeners and farmers first go through the plow and turn over the deep layers of the soil, then work on them several times with knives, leveling the surface and breaking up the clods.

If the site is small and you need, for example, to dig up the strawberry bed or last year’s lawn, you can get by with strawberries. But do not forget that if you walk along the garden several times, the result will be good, and if you repeat 3-4 more times, the earth will become soft and quite suitable for planting.

When choosing a walk-behind tractor, pay attention to the size of the working surface of the attachment. As a rule, in budget models of motoblocks, the size of the cutters at the cutter is 15-18 mm, and an inexpensive plow plows to a depth of 22-23 cm, so the plow will fit better on virgin soils.

Before buying tillage equipment, you need to know what kind of work you will face and how often they will need to be done. If the site is small and well developed, the plow will practically not be used, but it will take up space in the utility block. When plowing large undeveloped areas and virgin land, a plow is indispensable.
