You can password protect PST files where Outlook stores all email, contacts and calendar data. A password protects potentially sensitive files from being accessed by other users of your computer.

The instructions in this article apply to Outlook 2019, Outlook 2016, Outlook 2013, Outlook 2010, and Outlook for Office 365.

Protect access to Outlook PST file with password

When you apply a password to an Outlook PST file, a prompt appears when you start Outlook or when you first open the file in an Outlook session.

  1. Open Outlook.

  2. Go to the tab File and choose Information

  3. Select account settings account settings

  4. In the dialog box account settings select tab Data files

  5. Select the Outlook data file (.pst) for which you want to create a password.

  6. Select Institutions change Password

    If you have an Exchange account, press the button change Password will not appear. Your network password is used for your .pst password.

  7. In text fields New password And Confirm password enter password.

    The password must be between 8 and 15 characters long and can contain both upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols.

  8. Select Okay to save the new password.

  9. Close the dialog account settings
