Using keyboard shortcuts

In Excel 2019, Excel 2016, Excel 2013, or Excel 2010, you can use a keyboard shortcut to rename a sheet tab.

This sequence of keystrokes activates ribbon commands. Once the last key in the sequence, R, is pressed and released, the current name is highlighted in the sheet tab of the current or active sheet.

  1. Successively press the following key combination to highlight the name of the active sheet: Alt+H+O+R

  2. Enter a new name for the sheet.

  3. Press key Enter on the keyboard to finish renaming the sheet.

As in the case of renaming a sheet with hotkeys no need to press any key alt when other keys are pressed, as with some hotkeys. Each key is alternately pressed and released.

View all sheet tabs in a workbook

If the workbook has many worksheets or the horizontal scroll bar is extended, not all sheet tabs are necessarily visible at the same time. The longer the sheet names, the longer the tabs.

To resolve this situation:

  1. Place the mouse pointer on the vertical ellipsis (three vertical dots) next to the horizontal scroll bar.

  2. The mouse pointer changes to a double-headed arrow, as shown in the image above.

  3. Hold down the left mouse button and drag the pointer to the right to expand the viewing area of the sheet tab, or to the left to expand the scroll bar.

Restrictions on Excel Sheet Name

There are a few limitations when it comes to renaming an Excel sheet:

  • The name cannot be longer than 31 characters.

  • Sheet name cannot be empty

  • The following characters must not appear in the name: /? † []

Using sheet names in Excel formulas

Renaming a sheet not only makes it easier to keep track of individual sheets in a large workbook, it also has the added benefit of making formulas that span multiple sheets easier to understand.

If the formula contains a cell reference from another sheet, the sheet name must be in the formula.

If default sheet names are used, such as: Sheet2, Sheet3 the formula would look something like this:

 = Лист3! C7 + Лист4! C10

Give worksheets a descriptive name, for example May issues And June issues – can simplify formula decoding. For instance:

 = 'Майские расходы'! C7 + 'Июньские расходы'! C10
