Improve Microsoft’s email filter by marking spam messages as junk

The spam filter in Outlook isn’t perfect and new forms of junk e-mail pop up every day. To help Microsoft Exchange Online Protection improve and customize Outlook’s spam filter for greater effectiveness, report all spam it transmits.

The instructions in this article apply to Outlook 2019, Outlook 2016, Outlook 2013, Outlook 2010, and Outlook for Office 365.

Make sure to enable the spam reporting tool

To verify that the Spam Reporting Tool for Microsoft Office Outlook is installed:

  1. Go to the tab File

  2. Select Functions

  3. In the dialog box Outlook options select add-ons

  4. mention Inactive applications select Microsoft Spam Reporting Add-in

    If the Microsoft Junk Email Reporting Add-in is not listed, download it from the Microsoft website.

  5. Click the drop-down arrow Check select com add-ons and then select To go

  6. Check box Microsoft Spam Reporting Add-in

  7. Select Okay to enable the plug-in and reset the spam settings. Restart Outlook if prompted.

Report spam in Outlook

Once you’ve enabled the add-on, with a few clicks, report the junk email that lands in your inbox.

  1. Select the message you want to report.

  2. Go to the tab House and in the group remove select drop-down arrow mess † If the message is open in a separate window, click the tab Message and select the drop-down arrow mess

  3. Select Report junk e-mail

  4. Select Yes if requested. If you don’t want to be prompted for verification in the future, select Don’t show this message again
