Have you lost an important message? Maybe it’s in the archive

Google’s Gmail service offers the ability to archive messages for later viewing, but you need to know where to find those archived emails and how to get them back to your inbox.

Gmail makes it easy to archive emails and just as easy to return them to your inbox. However, you may not know where these archived emails are stored in your Gmail account.

To view all emails previously archived, you need to open the shortcut All emails . Once you’ve found this part of Gmail, you can put the archived Gmail messages back in your inbox to use them like you did when you first received them.

Where to find archived Gmail

Although archived messages are deleted from your inbox, they are still stored in your Gmail account and can be retrieved in just a few steps. These messages also remain indexed and appear when you search for Gmail messages.

You can open archived emails on your computer, tablet, or phone. Emails can be viewed in the archive, but if you plan to continue the conversation, it’s best to move them to your inbox.

Receive archived emails in the browser

  1. Open Gmail in your browser. Hover over the navigation icons on the left side of the screen to open the navigation bar.

  2. Select Lake at the bottom of the navigation bar to view more options.

  3. Select All emails on the left navigation bar.

  4. Check the boxes next to all the emails you want to return to your inbox. Emails already in the inbox will be flagged inbox for the subject line.

  5. Click on icon Move to mailbox on the main toolbar above emails.

  6. A confirmation will appear to verify that the emails have been moved to your inbox. Click or tap Cancel if you want to cancel the process.

Retrieve archived emails with the mobile app

Find the All Mail option in the Gmail mobile app by tapping a message and opening the menu button in the top right corner of the screen.

  1. Open the Gmail app on your mobile device to view your inbox.

  2. Click the three-lined icon at the top of the screen and select All emails on the panel that opens.

  3. Click on the email you want to receive.

  4. Select the three-dot icon at the top of the email that opens.

  5. Click Move to mailbox .

Tips to avoid accidental archiving

It’s pretty easy to slip in and accidentally archive a message. You can prevent this by taking the following precautions:

  • On a smartphone or tablet, take your time to scroll through messages and don’t make sudden movements from right to left.

  • The archive movement can be changed in the application settings with: General settings > Swipe actions .

  • Keep an eye out for any confirmation messages that the conversation has been archived. They are usually associated with a button. Cancel which can be used if necessary.
