Scissors tools in Adobe InDesign

The world of page layout software and the world of scalable vector graphics were once dominated by completely different and separate programs. As layout software has evolved, SVG elements have been added to these programs so that many simple illustrations can be created directly in the layout program. In the case of Adobe, this is reflected in the parallel development of InDesign and Illustrator. Along with the ability to work with vector graphics in InDesign, a need arose to include in InDesign the tools most commonly used with these graphics. Scissors are one such tool.

Splitting an open path with scissors

Any open path drawn with the drawing tools in InDesign can be split using the scissors tool. Here’s how:

  • Select path with tool Choise .

  • Choose a resource Pair of scissors and click the path where you want to split it. This action places two new endpoints on the path you click, one of which is selected.

  • Switch to instrument Straight ahead Choise and click on one of the points formed by the Scissors tool.

  • Move the selected point to another location and then click on the point that was below it to activate it.

  • Work with these two points to modify the two new paths.

Cut to shape with scissors

The Scissors tool can also be used to separate shapes:

  • Select the shape with the tool Choise .

  • Click tool Pair of scissors on the toolbar.

  • Move the Scissors tool to where you want to cut. The scissors turn into a crosshair when placed directly over a stroke on a shape.

  • Click directly on the shape line.

  • Move to another position on the shape and click directly on the line of the shape.

  • Use the tool Choise to remove one part of the shape from another. Now they are two independent elements.

To remove a shape from a shape using straight lines:

  • Select the shape with the tool Choise .

  • Click tool Pair of scissors on the toolbar.

  • Move the scissors tool to the shape and click directly on the shape’s line in one position. A pair of scissors turns into a reticle when directly over a strike.

  • Group the remaining parts of the shape with Shift-Click > Object > Group if you want to use the shapes as one unit or use the tool Choise move individual shapes.

Cutting a curved shape with scissors

The Scissors tool can also be used to create a Bezier curve, just like the Pen tool. Use this function to cut out a curved portion of the shape.

  • Select the shape with the tool Choise .

  • Switch to instrument Pair of scissors .

  • Click anywhere on the shape’s line to place a dot.

  • Click and hold another spot on the shape’s line. Extrude a point to create a Bézier curve that removes the cross section from the shape.
