Send files (up to 10 GB) with Gmail via Google Drive

Mailboxes today have no problem storing and receiving messages with several GBs in document attachments. Email itself is a vehicle, it is basically also designed to send documents of almost any size. However, sending files via email is not very efficient, and any mail server can reject email larger than a certain – perhaps very limited – size.

Email and file sharing services

File upload services, which offer the document for download to recipients from the Internet (or via FTP), and collaboration sites, which allow recipients to edit and annotate files for download, are more reliable ways to transfer and share large files . They’re also generally more cumbersome to use than just sending an email attachment, but they don’t have to be.

For example, Google Drive integrates well with Gmail. Sending files directly from Gmail via Google Drive is a lot like joining and almost as easy. Instead of 25 MB, documents can be up to 10 GB in size and you can also choose shared file permissions.

Send large files (up to 10 GB) with Gmail via Google Drive

Upload a file (up to 10 GB in size) to Google Drive and easily share it via email in Gmail:

  1. Move your mouse over the button Add files (or sign) + ) when composing a message in Gmail.

  2. To send a file (or several) from your computer (that you have not yet uploaded to your Google Drive account): (Note that you can only embed files from Google Drive or from your computer at a time; you you can add both types to email separately of course.)

    Go to category To download .

    Drag a file (or multiple files) from your computer to Drag files here .


    if you don’t see it Drag files here or select no documents at all to upload via the dialog:

    Click Select files on your computer .

    If you have already uploaded files, click Add additional files .

    Select all the files you want to upload.

    Click normal Open .

  3. Click To download .

To send a file (or files) to your Google Drive account:

  1. Go to category My drive .

  2. Mark all documents you want to share via email for review.

    Use search and tags to find files.

  3. Click Insert .

If one or more documents attached to the message have not yet been shared in Google Drive with all email recipients, after clicking . clicked send :

  • To send a link that allows: everybody to leaf through but don’t edit or comment on Google Drive files:

  • To send a link that allows: everybody edit and comment files in Google Drive:

    • know for sure Can be edited selected in section Anyone with a link: .

  • To send a link that allows: everybody see commentary but don’t edit files in google drive:

  • Only share documents with recipients (and not those using the link) through their Gmail (or Google) account in Google Drive:

    • Click extra options .

    • know for sure Recipients of this email selected in section Change how these files are shared on disk.

    • To let everyone recipients to leaf through but don’t edit or comment on Google Drive files:

      • know for sure Can be seen selected in section Recipients of this email: .

    • To let everyone recipients edit and comment files in Google Drive:

    • To let everyone recipients see commentary but don’t edit files in google drive:

      • know for sure you can comment selected in section Recipients of this letter .

  • Click Send and send .

    • To send a link that doesn’t have permissions of its own and doesn’t change or add permissions in Google Drive:

      • Click Send without sharing .

(Gmail also lets you go the other way: saving files received as regular email attachments to Google Drive is usually a one-click process.)
