Do you want to send someone a message, but your phone is not handy? Try these tips

Texting goes hand in hand with smartphones, but sometimes you may want to message or reply from your computer. First, you don’t have to spend 20 or 30 minutes browsing photos or social media when you only need to send one quick message. It’s also useful if you need to send a longer message and prefer to type it on a real keyboard.

Whatever the reason, texting from your computer is easier than ever, with multiple methods depending on the platform. Here are seven ways to send text from your computer.

Send text messages from your computer with iMessage (iOS and MacOS)

Apple’s iMessage service has long been a popular way to send messages between iPhones, and now you can send them from your Mac too. All you need is the Messages app on your iPhone and Mac and an Apple ID. Make sure you sign in with the same Apple ID you use for Messages on your iPhone and other devices. To use this feature, you need iOS 8 or later on your iPhone and OS X Yosemite or later on your Mac. It is also compatible with Apple Watches running watchOS 1.0 or later.

iMessage can use data or Wi-Fi to send and receive messages, so it doesn’t count against your texting plan. You can forward text messages (for example, from Android users) from your iPhone and iPad to your Mac by going to Settings Messages Forward SMS messages and then choose which devices can send and receive text messages from your iPhone.

Send text from your computer with Android Messages (Android and web browsers)

You can send and receive text messages, photos, voice messages, and videos using Android Messages on your smartphone and desktop. To link the mobile app and the web version:

  1. Open the app Messages on your smartphone, press Menu Advanced options (three vertical dots), then press Messages for the web † Android messages count towards your data plan; the app does not consume any data and the recipient does not need to have the app.

  2. Visit https://messages.android.com on your computer using one of the following browsers: Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, or Microsoft Edge. Internet Explorer is not supported.

  3. On an Android smartphone, press Scan QR code and aim it at the QR code displayed on the computer.

  4. To turn on Remember this computer under the QR code if you are using a trusted device, you only need to do this once. You can then enable desktop notifications and you will see your text history on the page.

Sync Text Messages with Pushbullet (Android, iOS and Web Browsers)

Pushbullet syncs your texts between your smartphone, web browser and desktop PC; it also allows you to share websites and images from your smartphone to your computer (or multiple computers) and vice versa. There are Pushbullet apps for Android, iOS and Windows PCs. Pushbullet also works with Chrome, Firefox and Opera browsers.

  1. Install the mobile app on your phone and the desktop app on your computer.

  2. Log into each app with your Google or Facebook account to link them together and you’ll see pop-up text notifications on your desktop that you can reply to; You can also initiate texts.

  3. To check if notifications are working, go to Settings in the Android mobile app and click Send test message † It should show up on both your phone and your computer, and if you disable the alert on both devices, it should reset on the other as well.

Send text with Cortana (Android & Windows 10)

Android users with a Windows 10 PC can also send text messages from their computer:

Launch the Cortana app on your Android smartphone. Click hamburger menu then go to Settings Synchronize notifications † To turn on Missed call notifications Incoming message notifications and App notification sync

On your Windows 10 PC:

Send text messages with Google Voice (cross-platform)

You can also text for free with Google Voice to numbers in the US and Canada.

  1. On your smartphone or PC, go to your account page and select message icon left. Here you will also see your text history.

  2. Select send a message to create a new one or select a conversation to continue the discussion.

Texts show as sent from your Google Voice number.

  3. That’s all.

The Google Voice interface is very similar to Google Hangouts; in fact, you can link hangouts to a Voice account:

  1. First, make sure you’re signed in to each service with the same username and email address.

  2. Go to page hangouts.google.com and go to Menu Settings

  3. In chapter Google Voice Check the box Receive text and voicemail in Hangouts

When you receive text messages in Hangouts, they are tagged as text messages via Google Voice.

  4. You did!

You can also open Hangouts in Gmail. At the top of the video conferencing list, select down arrow next to your name and profile picture, then scroll down to the screen Settings and check the box next to Receive text and voicemail in Hangouts

send text

Another method, albeit cruder than the others in this article, is to send a text message via email. Every mobile provider has an email formula for this. For example, to send a text message (SMS) to an AT&T user, write “[email protected]” but replace “number” with a 10-digit phone number. To send an MMS (multimedia message such as a photo), send an email to “[email protected]”. Contact the carrier or refer to this list of carrier email addresses.

The problem here is that the email may end up in the recipient’s spam folder or get lost randomly as it is different from standard email addresses. You also need to know what media the recipient is using.

Texting from computer via SMS sites

Finally, there are texting websites that allow you to send text messages anonymously.

Some of these sites collect the numbers that users enter and sell them to third parties. This method is best used as a last resort when anonymity is critical.
