You may need to know the number of words in a Microsoft Word document for a school or work assignment, or to meet the publishing requirements for a blog post or other document. Microsoft Word counts words as you type and displays this information in a simple form in the status bar at the bottom of the document window. The information is displayed the same in almost all versions of the software. Open the Word Count window for comprehensive statistics on character count, paragraphs, and other information.

Word Count for PC
Word count for documents in Word 2016, Word 2013, Word 2010, and Word 2007 is displayed in the status bar at the bottom of the document. The status bar displays the word count in the document without opening another window.
Word 2010 and Word 2007 do not automatically display the word count in the status bar. If the word count is not displayed:
Right-click the status bar at the bottom of the document.
Select A number of words in parameters Customize status bar nasty display the word count.
Word count in Word for Mac
Word for Mac 2011 displays the word count slightly differently than the PC versions of Word. Instead of just showing the total word count, Word for Mac shows the selected words along with the total word count in the document in the status bar at the bottom of the document. If no text is selected, the status bar displays only the word count for the entire document.
You can also insert the cursor into the document instead of highlighting the text to show the word count up to the insertion point.
Count selected text in Word for PC
Select the text to see the word count in a sentence or paragraph in the desktop versions of Word. The word count of the selected text is displayed in the status bar at the bottom of the document.
You can count words in multiple text fields at the same time by tapping and holding ctrl during text selection.
You can also count the number of words in just part of your document by highlighting the text and clicking Overview † A number of words †
