Tired of seeing junk mail? Here’s How To Avoid Getting Them
No matter how hard you try, you can never completely avoid junk e-mail or spam. You can hide most spam emails in the spam folder using filters, but spam still takes up space or avoids filtering. There is no guaranteed way to remove all spam from your mailboxes, but here are a few ways to at least reduce the amount of spam you receive.
Common Causes of Spam
To really understand how to reduce spam, you need to consider the source of these emails, usually spammers, and the methods they use to spam you.
One of the most common forms of spam you’ve probably encountered is promotional emails from legitimate sellers and other companies. Chances are, by signing up for a service or account with one of these companies, you’ve also signed up for their weekly newsletters/circulars/e-coupons. Spam caused by giving your email address to a legitimate company can be annoying, but it’s usually harmless.
However, malicious spam emails do exist. They are usually sent by spammers rather than reputable companies. Spammers can obtain your email address in several ways, including buying (illegal) lists of email addresses stolen from ISPs.
If you can’t avoid posting your email address where spammers can easily get it, you can try disguising your email address by using it as an image instead of text or by using a disposable email address service.
Harmless Spam: Opt Out of Commercial Advertising Spam
As we mentioned before, commercial spam from well-known retailers or other companies is usually harmless. If you are already receiving commercial advertising spam from a reputable company and want it to stop, here’s how to unsubscribe.
To avoid receiving more of these communications in the future, when subscribing to a website or service, you should be aware of the option to unsubscribe from marketing emails or newsletters from that company. This is usually a checkbox that you can select to subscribe or unsubscribe from promotional emails.
Log in to your email account.
Open one of the commercial offers you want to unsubscribe from.
Scroll to the bottom of the message and select the link to unsubscribe from further promotional emails. However, if you have not signed up for this promotional email, please delete it. Selecting a link doesn’t really give you anything, and it can let a spammer know that your email address is valid and ripe for receiving spam emails.
Some email providers, such as Gmail, may have their own unsubscribe button for you to choose from. In Gmail, it’s usually to the right of the sender’s name.

Malicious spam: block and mark these messages as spam
Malicious spam can pose a threat to the security of your personal information and the health of your computer, as they are often used to steal personal information from you and/or infect your computer with malware.
The most common types of malicious spam are:
- money fraud . Spam messages designed to trick unsuspecting email users into sending money to the spammer or sending personal financial information in the hope of getting money from the spammer.
- Spam Lottery Winner : Emails that “notify” you when you win a raffle or a prize in a competition you most likely never entered. To “claim” your prize, you usually have to select a schematic link or provide personal information.
- Email Spoofing/Phishing . Letters designed as official letters from companies you trust. These emails mimic things like company logos to trick unsuspecting recipients into sending sensitive personal information.
- Antivirus Spam Alert : Spam messages that “warn” you about a malware infection and offer you to easily scan your computer (or other antivirus help) to help “fix” your computer. When users try to get help through the schematic link, their computers get infected with malware or a spammer gains access to the recipient’s system.
When it comes to malicious spam, your email provider’s own spam filter is indeed the most effective defense against this more malicious spam. Sometimes these spam filters need some help as some spam emails can get past the filters.
You can train these filters to be less tolerant of this type of spam by blocking their senders and making sure you mark or report unwanted messages as spam when you notice them arriving in your main inbox.
Here’s how to report messages as spam and block specific senders so your email provider knows how to filter those messages in the future.
Log in to your email account.
Open the message you want to report as spam and/or block the sender.
Right click on a message from your inbox or select the icon three dots in an email message.
This step depends on your email provider. For example, in Outlook you can right-click on an email; in Gmail and Hotmail, select the icon three dots .
To mark a message as spam, select Report spam , Mark as spam , or even Mark as spam . The names of these options may vary by email provider.
To block the spam sender (or anyone else sending junk emails), select Block the sender . The name may be different for different email providers.
