Design themes were first introduced in PowerPoint 2007. They work in the same way as design templates in earlier versions of PowerPoint. The great thing about themes is that you can immediately see the effect on your slides before you make a decision.

Apply design theme
Click on the tab Design on the tape.
Hover over one of the design theme icons shown.
The design appears directly on the slide, so you can see how it will look when you apply this design theme to your presentation.
Click the icon design themes to find the one that fits your needs. This will apply the theme to your presentation.
More design themes available
The design themes that appear directly on the Design tab of the ribbon are not all available themes. You can browse existing design themes by clicking the up or down arrows to the right of the themes shown, or by clicking the drop-down arrow to open all available design themes at once.
Other design themes can be downloaded from the Microsoft website by clicking this link.
Change the color scheme of a design theme
Once you have chosen the design theme style for your PowerPoint presentation, you are not limited to the theme color as it is currently applied.
Press the button colors at the right end of the skins on the Design tab on the Ribbon.
Hover your mouse over the different color schemes shown in the drop-down list. The current selection is displayed on the slide.
Click the mouse button when you have found the correct color scheme.
Font families are part of the theme design
Each theme is assigned a font family. After you choose a design theme for your PowerPoint presentation, you can change the font family to one of the many groupings in PowerPoint 2010.
Press the button Fonts on the right side of the skins displayed on the tab Design on the tape.
Hover over one of the font families to see how that font group will look in your presentation.
Click on the mouse button when you have made your choice. This font family is applied to your presentation.
PowerPoint background theme styles
Just as you can change the background of a simple PowerPoint slide, you can do the same with one of the many themes.
Press the button background styles on the Design tab on the Ribbon.
Place the mouse pointer over one of the background styles.
The background style is displayed on the evaluation slide.
Click your mouse when you find the background style you want.
Hide background images for a design theme
Sometimes you want to show your slides without background images. This is often the case with printed matter. The background images stay with the design theme, but can be hidden from view.
Check box Hide background images on the Design tab on the Ribbon.
The background images will disappear from your slides, but you can re-enable them at any time by unchecking the box.
