App passwords and “less secure apps” protection add a layer of security

Gmail insists that you avoid common security loopholes that lead to account hijacking. This secure approach prevents you from opting for less secure email management approaches that seem convenient but expose your account to additional security vulnerabilities.

Google App Security Approach

Google considers an app “less secure” if the app cannot be easily disconnected from your Google account, cannot connect with an app-specific password, cannot be restricted by the data accessing from your account, and refuses it access level. the app requires when you connect to it.

By default, apps that don’t meet Google’s criteria won’t be able to connect to your Google account, including Gmail. However, you can bypass this security setting through a setting in your Google Account.

Allow access to Gmail for less secure programs or email services

To allow “less secure” mailers to access Gmail if your account is not set up for multi-factor authentication:

  1. Click on your photo, avatar or overview in the top right corner of Gmail, then select google account.

  2. Select Login and security .

  3. know for sure Allow less secure apps enabled on .

If your account has two-step verification enabled, which is what Google calls 2-step verification , this option is not available; you must create a password for each application.

Generate an app password

When you activate multi-factor authentication, you must confirm account activities, such as login and account changes, with username and password credentials, as well as an app-generated code, SMS or hardware token.

When multi-factor authentication is active, you cannot enable the “less secure access” feature, as this feature still uses your Google account password. Instead, you need an app password. This is a one-time revocable login data that you use for one program or service.

To create an application password:

  1. Visit my Google Account Dashboard page in your favorite browser.

    google account

  2. From the left sidebar menu, select Safety and then go to the section labeled Sign in to Google . Select link Application passwords .

  3. Sign in to your Google account again if prompted.

  4. View the app passwords you’ve already created. If an app no ‚Äč‚Äčlonger needs access to your Google account, remove the specific password. By checking this screen regularly, you can protect your account from unauthorized access, especially when you are connected to a service and not a desktop program.

  5. Add a new password using the dropdowns Select application and Select device and then click To create.

Available apps include Mail, Calendar, Contacts, YouTube, and more. When you choose an app, you describe what you do in your favor, so if you create a long list of app passwords and need to revoke them, it will be easier to find the right account.

Available devices include iPhone, iPad, BlackBerry, Mac, Windows Phone, Windows Computer, and more.

If you select “Other”, you will be prompted to enter a text message for the app and device.

Specifying the app and device does not restrict access to the account – the device using the app password will still have full access to your Google account.

  6. After you generate an app password, a pop-up window will appear in your Google account suggesting a random 16-digit password. Use this password in addition to your email address to authenticate with the app or service. Although the password is displayed in four groups of four letters, no spaces are used if you enter the password manually. (When you copy it, you will notice that there are no spaces in the app password.)

The application password is displayed in a pop-up window. When you uncheck the box, you will no longer have access to this password. In other words – use it when the box is open, because when the box is closed, the 16 character password is gone forever.
