Stop junk emails with a few easy steps

Mailing lists are a great way to stay up to date with your favorite people, places, topics and more. However, sometimes the interest in the mailing list disappears. If you no longer wish to receive emails from the mailing list, please unsubscribe from those emails.

How to Stop Junk Emails

There are many ways to unsubscribe from your newsletter and prevent unwanted emails from landing in your inbox. The choice of method depends on the type of mailing list and your preferences.

  • Select the “Unsubscribe” link in the email message † This is perhaps the easiest way. Once you click the “unsubscribe” link, you will be automatically removed from the mailing list.
  • Mark an email from the mailing list as spam † This includes setting rules in your email program to block emails from a specific email address.
  • Use the unsubscribe service † If you want to manage your mailing lists in one place, look for an unsubscribe service that lists all mailing lists in your inbox.
  • Use the app to unsubscribe via email † If you access your email from a mobile device, there are several apps for Android, iOS, and Outlook that automatically unfollow you on mailing lists.

Select the unsubscribe link in the email

As you scroll through the list of emails in your inbox, you may see an email from a mailing list that no longer interests you. Mailing lists are required to provide contact information in email, and many provide an unsubscribe link. Use this link to quickly remove your name from the mailing list.

Unsubscribe via the link in an email:

  1. Open the email application.

  2. Select an email from the mailing list.

  3. Scroll to the end of the letter.

  4. Select link Cancel subscription

  5. The web page opens in your default browser and displays the message that you have successfully unsubscribed from the mailing list.

  6. Select Cancel subscription if you are asked to confirm that you no longer wish to receive emails from the mailing list.

  7. Gmail provides an “Unsubscribe” link in the header of a mailing list email message. This link to unsubscribe can also be found in Outlook Online.

  8. Select link Cancel subscription

  9. In the confirmation window, select Cancel subscription to confirm that you want to be removed from the mailing list.

  10. You have unsubscribed from the mailing list and the e-mail application moves the selected message to the Spam or Deleted Items folder.

Mark an email from the mailing list as spam

If not all emails reach your inbox when you unsubscribe from the newsletter, block this address. Many email applications can block spam from your inbox.

  1. Select an email from the mailing list.

  2. Select in Gmail Yet Report spam † In Outlook, select Online mess Block † In Outlook 2019, go to At home and choose mess > Lock Sender

In Outlook Online, select Swipe to delete messages from a sender that are in your inbox and messages you receive in the future.

  3. These emails will be marked as spam and sent to the Junk Mail or Deleted Items folder.

Use the unsubscribe service

If you are subscribed to several mailing lists and want to empty your mailbox at the same time, use the unsubscribe service. There are several websites where you can access all your mailing lists from one place and you can unsubscribe from a mailing list by selecting it.

Unsubscribe services scan your inbox for messages with an unsubscribe link. To use these services, you must give these services access to your inbox.

One of the popular unsubscribe services is Unsubscriber. To get started with Unsubscriber, register on the Unsubscriber website. After registration, an unsubscribe folder will be added to your inbox.

Unsubscriber works with Outlook, Yahoo, AOL and most IMAP mailboxes. On March 31, 2019, a subscriber terminated Gmail due to changes to the Gmail Terms of Service.

When spam arrives in your inbox, drag it to your Unsubscribe folder. The sender will automatically receive a notification that you want to unsubscribe. Emails from these senders will be blocked from your inbox and stored in your unsubscribe folder until you unsubscribe from the mailing list.

Use the email unsubscribe app

If you access your email from a mobile device, use one of the unsubscribe apps to remove your email address from mailing lists.

Unroll.Me is a popular unsubscribe email app that lists all your subscribed emails and offers a one-click unsubscribe method. Unroll.Me also gives you the option to group your favorite email subscriptions into a summary. Then, instead of looking at those emails in your inbox, use the digest to find those subscriptions.

Unroll.Me has apps for Android and iOS. Unroll.Me also has a free online unsubscribe service. Sign in with your Google, Yahoo, Outlook, or AOL account and Unroll.Me lists the emails you’ve received from mailing lists. Just select the emails you want to unsubscribe from.
