Read and edit MS Word files for free with Google Docs

Google Docs is one of the free ways to edit Microsoft Word documents online. After the Word file is added to Google Docs, you can read the document, make changes, and share it with others from within your Google account.

Docs available in Google Docs can be accessed from a computer through the Google Docs website or through the Android or iOS app.

Send Word documents to Google Docs

Google Docs is part of Google Drive, so to use Word documents in Google Docs, you must first upload them to Google Drive.

  1. Open Google Drive. If you see a button Go to Google Drive , click it and sign in with your Google account.

  2. Click New .

  3. Click File upload . To upload a folder full of multiple Word documents, click Upload folder .

  4. To upload a folder full of multiple Word documents, click Upload folder .

Now that the document has been uploaded to Google Drive, you can save it there for backup purposes or to share with others. However, to edit a Word document for the web using Google Docs, you need to convert it to a format recognized by Google Docs.

  1. Open Google Docs.

  2. Select the Word document you want to edit with Google Docs.

  3. Click EDIT AS GOOGLE DOCS . The document is converted to a format that Google Docs can use.

  4. The original Word document is still stored in your Google Drive account, but every time you edit that document in Google Docs, it turns into a converted document.

Download an edited Google Docs file

If you need to upload a file from Google Docs, you can do it from the document’s edit page.

  1. Open Google Docs and select the document you want to upload.

    The document opens to a page where you can make changes. If you don’t see this page, you clicked on the wrong document.

    You can tell which documents are Google Docs files and which are still Microsoft Word documents by looking at the file extensions. Google Docs files don’t have a file extension, so if there’s a .DOCX or .DOC suffix after the file name, the file hasn’t been converted to Google Docs format yet (meaning it’s not a file you edited in Google Docs).

  2. Go to section File > Download as and select a file format. You can choose from formats such as DOCX, ODT, RTF, PDF, EPUB and more.

  3. Select the folder where the document should be saved. It can also be downloaded directly to your computer if you have defined a download folder for your browser.

  4. Click Save .

A quick way to save a Word document from Google Docs back to your computer is through Google Drive. Right click on the file and select To download .
