Save time and effort by giving your presentations a unified look

If you want all the slides in your PowerPoint presentation to look the same, use Slide Master to save time and effort. Apply fonts and styles, add media, and insert footnotes. Changes to the slide master affect all slides in the presentation.

The instructions in this article apply to PowerPoint 2019, 2016, 2013, 2010, 2007, 2003; PowerPoint for Office 365 and PowerPoint for Mac.

Access PowerPoint Slide Master

PowerPoint Slide Master is like a style sheet for your presentations. Changes to the slide master are applied to slides created after formatting the slide master.

To access the Slide Master in a PowerPoint presentation:

  1. Select Vision

  2. Select slide Master † Select in PowerPoint 2003 Master slide master

  3. The Slide Master view opens and a Slide Master tab has been added to PowerPoint.

Change layout in slide master

The Slide Master view contains all the slide layouts used in PowerPoint. The Slides panel shows thumbnail images of the master slides (top thumbnail) and associated slide layouts (thumbnails below the master slide).

Changing the font on the master slide affects text placeholders on all slides. However, due to the variety of layouts, not all placeholders are subject to changes made in the Slide Master. You may need to make additional changes to the various slide layouts.

Make changes in Slide Master before creating your presentation. If you change the font style or color on a slide before editing the slide master and slide layouts, the formatting on those slides is preserved.

To make changes in Slide Master:

  1. Select slide master † This is the top thumbnail on the scroll bar. Select in PowerPoint 2003 Title Master

  2. Go to the tab slide master to change the theme, theme colors, fonts, and background for the entire presentation.

  3. On panel slides select the slide layout thumbnail and make changes in the layout wizard if necessary.

Close the PowerPoint slide master

After you’ve made all your changes to the slide master, select slide master Close main view to return to the presentation slides.

Each new slide you add to your presentation will inherit the changes you made. You save time by not making changes to each individual slide. And your presentation will look consistent and professional.
