Voice or video chat on Android, PC, Mac or web
Skype is a popular way to make calls, video chat, or even text online, and many of them are even free. Skype is owned by Microsoft and is available for Windows, MacOS, iOS, Android and Linux. This is what you need to use Skype, regardless of platform.
What you need to use Skype
To use Skype, you need four things:
A smartphone or computer that meets the Skype system requirements, which we discuss below by platform
If your computer already has a built-in microphone (on both mobile devices and laptops), Skype will automatically find and use it. Skype is automatically installed on your mobile phone. For Mac and Windows, you may need to open the software installation yourself. To make video calls, you also need a webcam connected to your device.
A Microsoft ID is similar to a Google account, giving you access to all web services offered by Microsoft with a single username and password. If you already use these services, for example if you have a Hotmail account or if you buy and download apps from the Windows Store, you can use that account to sign in to Skype, no further registration is required. If you don’t have it:
Go to the Microsoft account page and click the “Create an account” button.
Enter the email address you want to use. We recommend that you use an account that matches how you will use Skype, as this name and ID can be searched by other Skype users, making it easier for people to contact you. For example, if you’re calling for business, your business email is a good choice. Then of course choose a password that is difficult to guess.
In a separate tab or window, navigate to the email account you entered. Microsoft will send you a four-digit code to verify your account. Enter this code and you have a Microsoft ID! Use it to sign in to Skype with the browser version at web.skype.com or the app you downloaded from the official Skype website.
Skype can be a fun and useful tool, and with a little practice you can master it. Call multiple times with multiple friends and you will be amazed at how easy it is to stay connected.
Skype on the web
We’re going to talk about using Skype in an app, but Skype also works great in a web browser. So if you need a quick call, read our complete guide to using Skype from a web browser.
Video calls and voice calls between two Skype accounts on any platform are completely free, but if you want to call a special phone number, such as someone’s mobile number or landline, it’s worth paying. Also keep in mind that if you’re using Skype on a mobile device or mobile hotspot, the app will use your data on that device. We’ll be using screenshots from the macOS version of Skype for this tutorial, but all the available apps use roughly the same layout.
Skype works the same on all different platforms, but they don’t always look the same. After reading this article, you can use Skype on any of the most popular systems.
Make a Skype call
If you know the Skype name of the person you want to contact, you can type it into the search bar you see in the top left corner below your name.
Click on the person you want to call and you will be taken to a window that fills most of the screen. There are three buttons in the top right corner. For a video call, press camera icon † Press . to make a voice call phone icon † third icon, man and plus icon you can add someone to the conversation.
When you click the icon, Skype “calls” the person until they answer. Make sure your microphone is turned on and your speakers or headphones are set to a comfortable level. If you are using video, make sure the camera is also turned on.
Traditional (some would say “old-fashioned”) phone calls are even easier. Click on the phone block button in the top left corner and you will be taken to the phone block. When you enter a number, it appears at the top of the window. If you’re calling abroad, there’s a drop-down menu below the number that adds the country code to your number, so you don’t have to enter it first.
Answer a call on Skype
When you receive a Skype call, your phone or computer will “ring”. This is controlled by your device’s volume settings, so if you mute it, you may not hear the call. But you will definitely see it on the screen. To answer, click on the popup on your device. Desktop or touch your phone’s screen.
Hang up a call in Skype
When you’re done talking to the person, press the red button with the phone in the middle; it is located in the lower right corner of the call window.
Skype on Mac
To use the Skype app on a Mac, you need MacOS X 10.9 or later. However, if you have an older Mac, you can sign in to the web version and use that instead.
Skype on iOS
The Skype app can be found in the App Store, but only works with iPhones and iPads running iOS 8 or later. If your device was first released in 2014 or later, it will work. Unfortunately, Skype browser features are not supported on mobile phones. To add someone to a call, make the call and then tap the person and the plus sign at the bottom of the screen.
Skype on Windows
Skype is very, very Windows-friendly. It works with any computer with Windows XP Service Pack 3 or later. However, you may also need to upgrade your version of Internet Explorer: Windows XP Service Pack 3 requires you to upgrade your Explorer to at least version 8, and Windows 7 users must use at least Internet Explorer 11. These downloads can be found in Microsoft Internet Explorer. support page. Also, keep in mind that if you’re using a version of Windows that is older than Windows 7, the Skype app is the only supported method of making calls.
Skype on Android
Skype works on any Android device with version 4.04 (Ice Cream Sandwich) or higher. If your device was released after 2012, Skype will work. You can download Skype from the Google Play Store. Just like in iOS, to add someone to a call you must first place a call and then tap the plus sign at the bottom center of the screen. The plus sign rotates and displays a menu with an “add person” sign in the lower left corner.
