Using Themes in PowerPoint

PowerPoint themes are predefined sets of colors, fonts, and other visual effects. Quickly apply a theme to your presentation to give it a professional and consistent look. You can also see the effect of the theme on the slideshow before applying it. Learn how to find, apply, and change design themes in PowerPoint.

These instructions apply to PowerPoint for Office 365, PowerPoint 2019, PowerPoint 2016, PowerPoint 2013, and PowerPoint 2010.

Apply design theme

To change the look of your presentation, apply a design theme.

To apply a design theme:

  1. Select Design .

  2. Place the mouse pointer on a topic. A preview of the design appears on the slide.

  3. Select the design theme you want to apply to your presentation.

Change the color scheme of a design theme

Once you’ve chosen a design theme for your PowerPoint presentation, you’re not limited to the theme color as it is now.

To change theme colors:

  1. Select Design .

  2. Select Lake (down arrow) in the “Options” group and select colors to display a list of color options. Select in PowerPoint 2010 colors in the Themes group.

  3. Move the mouse pointer over the color scheme. A preview of the color scheme appears on the slide.

  4. Select adjust colors to create your own color scheme.

  5. Choose a color scheme to apply to all slides in your presentation.

Font families are part of the theme design

Each theme is assigned a font family. After you choose a design theme for your PowerPoint presentation, change the font family to one of the many groupings in PowerPoint. When theme fonts are changed, the text in headings and bullets is updated throughout the presentation.

To change the fonts used in a presentation:

  1. Select Design .

  2. Select Lake in the Options group.

  3. Point at fonts .

  4. Select Customize fonts to select the custom fonts for the title and body text you want to use. The Create New Theme Fonts dialog box opens.

  5. Select the header and body font you want to apply to the theme.

  6. Enter a name for the theme and select Save .

PowerPoint theme effects

To add effects to the objects in your presentation, choose one of the built-in effects. Apply shadows, fills, strokes, and more throughout your presentation.

To apply an effect:

  1. Select Design .

  2. Select Lake in the Options group.

  3. Point at Effects .

  4. Hover over an effect to see it on the current slide.

  5. Select the effect you want to use to apply it to the entire presentation.

Hide background images for a design theme

Sometimes you want to show your slides without background images. This is often the case with printed matter. The background images stay with the design theme, but can be hidden from view.

Hide background images:

  1. Select Design .

  2. Select Background format to open the Format Background panel.

  3. Check the box next to Hide background images .

Background images will disappear from your slides, but you can re-enable them at any time by unchecking the box.
