Voicemail to text is a useful feature that is becoming more common. It creates a text version of the voicemail messages on your smartphone. While the transcription may not always be 100% accurate, it usually gives you a good idea of ​​what the message is about. Voicemail to text can be useful if you need to confirm something that was difficult to hear in the voicemail itself, or if you need to quickly scan incoming voicemail messages to find out which ones are most important to answer or follow up on.

Voicemail to text, also known as voicemail transcription or visual voicemail, is available on many iPhone and Android devices. Here’s how to use it.

How to Use Voicemail Transcription on iPhone

As text voicemail becomes more and more available, check with your carrier first to see if they support it. Depending on the plan you have with your carrier, they may charge an additional monthly fee to activate the voicemail transcription feature on your iPhone, and you may need to download a special app to use it.

These instructions work with an iPhone 6s or later with iOS 10 or later.

Here’s how to use voicemail to send text on iPhone.

  1. Open the app Telephone .

  2. Click Voicemail in the lower right corner of the screen.

  3. Click voicemail message.

  4. A paragraph of text should appear just above the play button. This is your voicemail entry. There may be some inaccuracies in the transcription, but you should get a general idea of ​​the content of the message.

    You can still listen to the message by clicking the Play .

  5. If you’d like, you can share feedback with Apple about whether the transcript was helpful by clicking the blue links. Usable or not usable below the transcript text.

  6. You can decide whether you want to keep, check or delete your voicemail. To save a copy of the transcript, click the icon Save in the upper right corner of the voicemail message, shown as an open window with an upward arrow. Then select Comments: to save the message in text format, or Voice Notes to save the message in audio format.

  7. You can also exchange voice messages with other people via Messages or Mail, or store them in a file management system such as Dropbox. These options are also located in the Save window.

Using Voicemail Transcription on an Android Phone

To use visual voicemail on your Android phone, you should first check with your carrier to see if it supports it. T-Mobile users can now access it in the visual voicemail section of their Google Phone app. Other providers may ask you to download their voicemail application to access voicemail transcription, in which case the service may come with a monthly fee.

If you don’t want to pay a fee, you can instead use YouMail, Google Voice, or another app to get your voicemail transcript. This is how you do it for free with Google Voice

  1. If you don’t already have the Google Phone app, download it from the Google Play Store.

  2. Sign up for a Google Voice account as you will need it to set up Google Voice.

  3. Click Get on to accept the terms of use.

  4. Select a phone number.

  5. Follow the steps to connect your Android device to Google Voice.

  6. Tell the Google Voice app if you want to use it for both voice calls and voicemail transcription. If you only want voicemail transcription, select Not .

  7. When you’re done, click Further and then press Finished .

  8. You need to go to the main screen of your new Google Voice account. When Google Voice asks for permission to access your contacts, tap To allow .

  9. In the top right corner, you will find your incoming voice messages in a tab with an icon that looks like a tape recorder. They are also decrypted automatically.

  10. If you want your incoming voice messages to be automatically emailed to you or to you, click the icon in the top left corner, then click Settings . Google Voice asks for your permission to access your photos, media, and files. Press To allow grant him access.

  11. Scroll down until you find the title Voicemail . If you see the option Voicemail Notifications already checked, you don’t need to do anything else; all your visual voice messages are sent to you via push notification. If it is not already installed, you can enable the setting manually.

    To receive your voicemail recordings via email, click Receive voicemail via email . To send you a message, click Receive voicemail via message .

  12. You’ve done everything. When you receive voicemail now, you should receive a transcript via notification shortly after.
