How to Reduce Cell Phone Costs?

If you want to save significantly on your mobile phone costs, here is a list of VoIP services that will help you keep your mobile phone costs as low as possible. You just need to choose the right service according to your needs, mobile phone type and model, connectivity, etc.

Truphone

What do we like?

  • Can be used without internet connection.

  • Cheap international rates.

What we don’t like

  • Only supports high quality phones.

  • No support for 3G or connections other than Wi-Fi.

By installing the Truphone software on your mobile phone, you can route your mobile phones over the Internet and make free calls to other Truphone users. Calling regular mobiles and landlines is cheap. With Truphone, you can make calls over Wi-Fi hotspots and your GSM network, allowing you to use it anywhere. The focus is on high-end phone models such as iPhone, BlackBerry devices, Nokia E and N, etc.

vopium

What do we like?

  • Automatically determines the cheapest way to call.

  • Unlimited data plans are very useful if you make daily international calls.

What we don’t like

  • No pricing information provided; You must request a quote.

  • Better for professional use than for personal use.

Vopium is a mobile VoIP service that allows you to make cheap international calls via GSM and VoIP, without the need for a data plan (GPRS, 3G, etc.) or a WiFi connection. If you have one of the latter, you can call other users using the same networks for free. Vopium also offers new users 30 minutes of free calls and 100 free texts to get started.

VoIP services for iPhone

Here is a list of VoIP services that work on Apple’s iPhone.

VoIP services for Blackberry

Here is a list of VoIP services that work on Blackberry devices.

Skype

What do we like?

  • Free individual and group conversations.

  • Impressive real-time translation tool.

What we don’t like

  • You can only receive text messages, but not send them.

  • Skype Phone no longer works.

You may be wondering why Skype isn’t at the top of this list with hundreds of millions of users. While Skype shines in PC-to-PC communication (for how long?), its presence in the mobile arena just fills a gap in its services. Skype only has softphones for Nokia Internet tablets, Windows Mobile devices and WiFi phones. Recently, Skype released its own mobile phone, the SkypePhone, which includes all the features and services of Skype. At the time of writing, it is not yet available in all countries. Rebtel

What do we like?

  • It has mobile apps for Android, iOS and BlackBerry devices.

  • No monthly fee.

What we don’t like

  • No phone or live chat.

  • The worldwide unlimited plan is limited to 52 countries.

Rebtel offers international numbers for your local contacts and therefore allows you to make international calls at low rates. What you pay is the local GSM rate plus a small Rebtel fee. You will need to enter your contact’s international number and Rebtel will generate a local number for the region you are in so you can call them.
