Voice and text chat on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS

Discord is a free application that combines the voice chat aspects of services such as Skype and Teamspeak with the text chat aspects of Internet Relay Chat (IRC) and various instant messaging services. It is available as a standalone desktop or mobile app, but it is also possible to access Discord through a web app that runs on web browsers such as Chrome and Firefox.

The instructions in this article apply to the Discord app for Windows, MacOS, Linux, Android, iOS, and web browsers.

What is Discord for?

Discord was created for online gamers as a free alternative to voice chat services such as TeamSpeak, Mumble, and Ventrilo. These services facilitate Voice over IP (VoIP) between members of gaming clans, guilds and other groups. Instead of using the voice communication tools built into games, which are often of lower quality, lack features, or don’t exist, gamers use these services to play together.

The downside of most VoIP services is that they require a server, which is usually not free. Some hosting companies offer a free VoIP server when you rent a regular game server, but there are some costs associated with running a TeamSpeak, Mumble or Ventrilo server.

Discord offers a similar service for free. The Discord app is free to download, signing up for a Discord account is free, and anyone can create a Discord server for free.

Discord offers a premium service called Discord Nitro. Paying for this premium service comes with perks like uploading large images and the ability to choose songs to be added to your Discord username.

How to start with disagreement?

Create a temporary account to get started with Discord. Register this account to make it permanent or cancel it when you’re done.

  1. Open a web browser and go to the Discord app’s website.

  2. Select Open Discord in your browser

  3. Enter your desired username and select the arrow in the text box.

Your username does not have to be unique. It is merged with a four digit number to distinguish it from other users using the same name.

  4. Check box I am not a robot and enter the code if provided.

  5. Select To skip to use Discord right away. Or choose Start of work to learn.

  6. Enter your email address and password, then select Claim an account to register your account. Or click outside the popup to skip this step.

  7. Search for communities and servers to join.

If you do not complete the creation of your account, it will be lost when you close your browser. Select Request an account Enter your email address and follow the instructions in the email to make your account permanent.

Now, if someone has given you a server invite link, click it to join.

Discord Web Version vs Discord Desktop App

Discord is available as a web app that runs in most browsers. There is also a desktop version for Windows, MacOS, Linux, Android and iOS. The desktop and web versions of Discord are nearly identical in almost every way and look very similar.

There are a few differences between the browser and desktop version of Discord. On the desktop app, push-to-talk is always enabled; in a web app, push-to-talk only works when the browser window has focus, so it’s not available during playback. The desktop version also lets your friends see what game you’re playing. The main advantage of the web version is that it does not need to be downloaded and can be used anywhere and on any computer without waiting for anything to be downloaded and installed.

If you use Discord a lot, it’s worth downloading the desktop app, but the web app is great because it lowers the login bar. For example, if you are playing a game with your friends and want to invite a remote player to voice chat. Services like TeamSpeak or Mumble require them to download the app, create an account, and enter your server details. With Discord, all they need to do is click the invite link, enter a temporary username if they don’t already have one, and they’re good to go.

Discord mobile app

In addition to the desktop and web apps, Discord is also available as an iOS and Android app. The Discord mobile app is very similar to the desktop app, but modified to work on smaller screens. When on a server, swipe right to see a list of voice and text channels and swipe left to see a list of all members on the server.

Voice chat on the Discord mobile app works just like the desktop app, so you can use it to chat with friends or teammates if you’re playing on a console that doesn’t support Discord.

The Discord mobile app has the ability to control the volume of other users, mute people so you can’t hear them, and mute yourself if you don’t want your friends to hear what’s going on in your house.

Download Discord for Android from the Google Play Store or Discord for iOS from the App Store.

How to join a server on Discord

While Discord has many servers that anyone can join, there is no central server list that you can browse. To join a Discord server, you often need a member or administrator of that server to provide you with a link. Some servers have permalinks, while others expire within a day.

If you have a link to a Discord server, click the link or join through the Discord app:

  1. Launch the Discord app or open Discord in a web browser.

  2. Select Add server (plus sign).

  3. Select Join the server

  4. Enter the invitation link, then select Participate

  5. To leave the server, right click on the server name and select Leave the server

How do you find servers to join

If you have a friend with a Discord server you’d like to join, request an invite. If you’re a member of a community that uses Discord, ask to be invited, or check out the community website, subreddit, forum, wiki, or wherever you think a permalink is stored.

You can also search for public servers that anyone can join by selecting magnifying glass on the left side of the Discord app interface.

Another way to find Discord communities is to do a search on your favorite search engine. For example, if you’re playing Final Fantasy XIV, look for:

 Финальный сервер XIV Discord

Create a server on Discord

Creating servers on Discord is free, but first you need to create an account. After creating an account and logging into Discord on your chosen platform:

  1. Launch the Discord app or open Discord in a web browser.

  2. Select Add server (plus sign).

  3. Select Create a server

  4. Enter a server name and select a region.

  5. Select To create

The server is immediately ready for use and generates a link that you can share with others. Check box Set this link to never expire to create a permalink for your community.

Select invite people on the server page to see the invite link again. To invite friends and people from other servers, right click on their user icon in Discord and select Invite to server your server

How to delete a server on Discord

To delete a Discord server you created:

  1. Select your server from the list on the left side of the application window.

  2. Select down arrow next to your server name.

  3. Select Server Settings

  4. Select Delete server

  5. Re-enter the server name when prompted.

  6. Select Delete server for confirmation.

You cannot undelete a server. Before shutting down a Discord server, make sure you want to remove it.

Add friends on Discord

There’s no way to search for friends by email or username, so you’ll need to either have someone’s full discord tag or be friends with them on another platform before you can add them to Discord.

When you subscribe to Discord, you enter a username. This is just part of your Discord tag. In addition to the name you choose, Discord adds four numbers in this format:

 Имя пользователя # 1234

Look in the lower left corner of the main Discord screen to find your full Discord tag under your username.

If you have a friend’s full Discord tag, including songs, you can submit a friend request:

  1. Run disagreement

  2. Choose an icon At home

  3. Select friends

  4. Select Add friend enter your friend’s full Discord tag, then select Send a friend request

  5. Your friend appears on Wait tab until he accepts the request.

Finding friends at odds with other services

The desktop version of Discord allows you to link your Discord account to other services such as Battle.net, Steam, and Reddit. You don’t need to link accounts, but it makes it easier to find friends. Linking some accounts, such as Xbox One, will also allow your friends to see that you’re playing on a different platform.

Go to the screen to link your Discord accounts Add friend and select Link accounts

You choose the type of account you want to link and the accounts you want to appear on your Discord profile.

When you link your accounts, Discord automatically pulls your friends list from the other service and checks if you have any Discord friends among you. If he finds one, you can send a friend request.

Make group calls for screen sharing

In addition to servers, Discord also supports Direct Messaging (DM) for private communication with friends, as well as group instant messaging for communication with small groups of friends. They exist separately from servers, so you and your friends don’t have to be members of the same server to use this feature.

To create a DM group with your friends for private voice chat, video chat and screen sharing:

  1. Run disagreement

  2. Choose an icon At home

  3. Select friends

  4. Select New DM group

  5. Select the friends you want to invite and then select Create a DM group

  6. Choose an icon telephone to start a voice call, or icon video camera to start a video call.

During a voice or video call, select camera to enable the webcam, or the icon to monitor to share the screen.

  7. Select Leave a call to end the call when you are done.

Discord groups can DM up to 10 people at a time, so it’s a good way for small groups to communicate without setting up a separate server. If you want more than 10 people to call at the same time, create a voice channel on the Discord server and use that instead.
